Nick Dautlich
Nick originally trained in graphic design specialising
in photography and typography just before the digital revolution and the
arrival of the Apple Mac. He then moved on to gain a degree in visual arts
at De Montfort University, working with mixed media, print and photography.
After a range of marketing-related jobs Nick is currently settled in a career
as Art Director at Sliced Limited, a small Brighton-based design boutique.
Since his graphics course Nick has experimented with the photographic process
both in and out of the darkroom, embracing the digital process early on and
using Adobe Photoshop as his digital darkroom. Photography plays a role in
the services Sliced offer their clients, and Nick has used his skills in
fashion photography, illustration and web design for a range of clients,
as well as selling his photographs to an international stock library.
With
a keen interest in cultural diversity and human study these images focus
on religion, portraiture, light and subject matter of the striking human
condition of people in Asia. These images are not digitally enhanced but
use natural light, colour and subjects that stimulate Nick’s senses
with a manual 35mm SLR. The Triptych included here focuses on his perception
of Indian devotions, exploring the contradictions between the revered and
the abhorrent. The revelry of devotion seems to contradict the day to day
reality of most people and creatures that occupy parts of the sub-continent.
He hopes that the beauty of the human spirit shines through these images.
