Anang Kusdario

Anang was born on May 5, 1961 in Bondowoso, a small town in East Java. A self taught artist, he chose Ubud, Bali, a place renowned for its vibrant and artistic community, to be his permanent residence. Like many European artists, Anang has been lured by the sheer simplicity, beauty and aesthetic aspects found in the island of Bali. After years of learning and living with different artist communities in Ubud, Anang has developed a new way of seeing objects using colours and simple lines to create realistic non-dimensional images. They illustrate ritualistic moments such as the burning of incense during an early morning offering, or a procession led by men walking up a hill under the glaring midday sun. With these real elements for his subjects, Anang transforms the image into a surrealistic and abstract art, inviting the viewer into a dream world of symbolism and imagination.

Despite his humble denial that he does not conceptualize and intellectualize his art, his new way of seeing and instinctive and spontaneous thought places the subjects of his art in centre stage, creating the appearance of abstract images which are nevertheless framed and structured within the narrative.

His paintings are sold largely in California in prominent Interior Design Houses, and a few of the collections are kept by private collectors in Paris and London.
