Rajyashra Ramamurthi

An accomplished dancer and conceptual artist, Raj was trained at the Royal Ballet School in London, then trained as an Odisi dancer under directorship of Sutapa Taludar in India. She gained her BA and MA at the University of Brighton in Dance and Visual Art.

Her excellent video presentation projects her creative skills in visualising the physical and the abstract of the dance, exploring the semantic language of Indian Classical Dance on camera. This led her to a commission in a Pilot Film Project by SEDA UK. Raj was also short listed for the NRLA – National Review of Live Art 2002, Glasgow. Raj has performed in many international events and venues such as the Udai Shankar festival in Kolkata, India and UNESCO Paris and is actively involved in participating the Brighton Fringe Festival.

Raj’ s most recent work is a series of photographic images depicting a female persona of a spirit like essence. The work originates from a dream experienced by the artist. Raj transposes the essence of feminine spiritual power into dreams – her work is sensuously poetic.
