Chris Schwarz
Schwarz is an international photo documentary journalist,
covering a wide range of subjects, from people and life in the traditionally
immigrant area of East London to the “Indians of the North”;
a photographic essay, showing the way of life and the environmental problems
facing the indigenous people of Alberta and Saskatchewan. In 1980 Schwarz
won an award for his photographic exhibition entitled “London Calling”,
showing the problems encountered by unemployed and homeless people coming
to London.
Chris’ book, “The Changing Face of Japan” is
a pictorial documentation of contemporary Japan; from Geisha to street fashion,
Tokyo subway to a Zen garden, published by Hodder in 2002.
Here he photographed
a captivating image of a Japanese young woman in mid winter Tokyo. As British
poet Lee Harwood narrated in his poem entitled “A Young Woman In Japanese
Garden”
Chris’s photograph of the young woman
makes you think that you are present to witness the passive face and her
invincible thought; it makes you feel the cold winter that travels into your
veins. However, once we look more closely, this picture discloses further
complexities of our daily lives, on which only the viewers can speculate.
