Made Wianta

Made Wianta was born in Apuan, Bali. An artist who possesses a solid academic background, Wianta studied Balinese Traditional Music - Karawitan, at Karawitan Conservatory at SSRI Denpasar. This was followed by visual art studies at the Indonesian Institute of Arts – ASRI in Yogyakarta. Soon after his graduation in 1974, he embarked on a two year artistic journey taking him to Brussels, where he worked and staged painting exhibitions both in Brussels and several other European countries. He has exhibited his work in Japan, Singapore, Thailand, India, USA, Switzerland, France, Malaysia, Germany, and numerous venues and prominent galleries across Indonesia. In 1994 Wianta was included in “The Best of Indonesia” Exhibition by the Ministry of Culture and Education. Over the years Wianta has been the focus of dozens of publications and critiques, illustrating his poetry and art.

Wianta is an exceptional artist who truly embraces the very essence of spirituality. He is actively engaged in social and environmental awareness. This is expressed in his installation works such as “Forest and Life”. In December 1999 and on World Peace Day he staged a monumental Millennium Performance, involving 200 young dancers dressed in white against black sand – a choreographic answer to the foaming waves of the sea. Wianta uses the natural environment both as a stage and symbolism such as using black and white colours in his art.

Wianta has also donated several of his paintings in support of many social causes. These include a fundraising exhibition together with other artists at the Bali Cliff Hotel to help poor regions of Bali (1995), and funds from the sale of several paintings were donated to help AIDS research in San Francisco and the earthquake victims of Flores, Indonesia (1993). Wianta’s artistic, social and environmental works have been widely recognized by many different states. He has received numerous awards: Professor for Correspondence of Academe from the Academia Internationale Gressi - Marino, Italy (1996), the Dharma Kusuma Award from the Bali Provincial Government (1999), Most Admired Man of the Decade in 1998 by the American Biography Institute, and MURI – Museum Record Indonesia in 2000.

Wianta’s work is meticulously intricate and technically controlled and yet beautifully abstract and enlightening.
