2007 – 2010 BiasArts Social Project
BiasArts has set up a small NGO with its Indonesian management - YAKEPSI. This
is a pilot project, which focuses on the community of Desa Mentor, a
fishing community outside of Probolinggo, East Java.
Desa Mentor inhabitants
depend solely on fishing for income. To provide for their families, the
men leave home to fish in the evening returning the following morning. The women leave in the early morning to
collect oysters at low tide. Their combined income is just enough to
cover their living costs. As a result, most of their children do
not have access to education – parents cannot afford even the lowest
government school fees.
The objective of this pilot project is to provide
educational facilities to children, teenagers and mothers. Basic
literacy and numeracy skills will be accompanied by vocational training
that will lay the groundwork for enabling and motivating the individual
to gain employment, access to further education and or form their own
small co-operative business.
The pilot project will commence in December
2006 as is currently building the centre and raising fund for computers,
books and recruiting part-time teachers.
Long term Project
To build together with Artist communities in Indonesia to build an international
contemporary art museum.
